Conservation at Sacred Mountain Sanctuary

​We recognize the forests, farms, fields and waterways of the Hominy Valley as an abundant, pristine Sanctuary of Nature, and are devoted to their stewardship and preservation. SMS is working with Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy, as well as the farmers and landowners of the greater Hominy Valley, to facilitate conservation awareness and offer educational programs that will insure the beauty and abundance of this Sanctuary are preserved in perpetuity.

In November 2013, through encouragement and support from SMS, Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy,  Buncombe County, and Boyd Hyder, land owner, cattle rancher and generous conservation advocate, placed the 120 acre mountain bald of SMS under a conservation easement.  This was a triumphant culmination of our work and encouragement, and a living representation of Mr Hyder’s profound generosity.  Read a full article about this conservation achievement below.
From the Asheville Citizen Times- ​The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners Tuesday approved spending $69,300 on a conservation easement to protect views from the Blue Ridge Parkway in Upper Hominy.  The easement will prohibit development of 121 acres atop Long Mountain, located between Upper Glady Fork Road and the parkway in southwestern Buncombe County.
